At the end of February, 1942, the Japanese began landing troops on both Western and Eastern Java. The remaining British and American pilots turned their equipment over to the Dutch on March 1 and made their way back to Australia as the Dutch continued to resist the Japanese invasion. The last remaining CW-21B Interceptors of VLG-IV had been moved to Western Java and on March 2nd, 4 CW-21B and 3 Brewster B-339D were scrambled to meet an attack escorted by approximately 20 JAAF Ki-43 fighters
