03-FEB-1942 Struggle over Soerabaja

The Allied forces have withdrawn all air assets to Java to defend the island from impending Japanese invasion. A mish-mash of Dutch, British, and American pilots try to stop the frequent raids by JNAF land-based bombers operating out of newly captured airfields on Borneo. However the lack of efficient early warning system meant that the Allied aircraft seldom had time to climb to the altitude of the bombers, freeing the JNAF Zeros to sweep the island for fighters. On this date, the pilots of VLG-IV are aloft in dispersed patrol zones when they encounter overwhelming attacks by elements of the Tinain Air Group and 3rd Air group
