23-AUG-1944 Instrument of Attack

On August 23, over 60 fighters of II Jagdkorp are patrolling northeast of Paris in search of Allied fighter-bombers when the flight is bounced by 24 Spitfires of 127 Wing, RCAF, led by Johnnie Johnson, the leading British or American ace of the ETO. The Spitfires surprised the Germans and the attack soon split up into individual dogfights.
