Throughout the early part of May 1942 the Japanese Naval Air Force hammered the complex of air fields that the Allies had built around Port Moresby in a bid to put their invasion plans back on track. The raid on the morning of May 18th was one of the largest, with 32 bombers and 15 fighters attacking the strip. However, the predictable raids meant that the Airacobras were in the air in time to climb up to the altitude of the bombers
