Boyd “Buzz” Wagner emerged from the fighting in the Philiiipines as one of America’s first aces and was given command of the 8th Pursuit Group to be based around Port Moresby, The leading elements of his command reached New Guinea on the morning of the April 30th and were ordered by Wagner to prepare for their first offensive sweep that very afternoon. Wagner lead a mixed formation of P-39s from both the 35th and 36th Squadrons north to strafe the Japanese installation at Lae. After their strafing run, the Airacobra pilots
were engaged by elements of the Tainan Air Group.
