7-JUN-1944 Seagulls to Seafires
Aerial gunfire spotting support for the battleships of TF 124 Bombardment Group were provided by the pilots of VCS-7 who normally flew SOC Seagulls or OS2U Kingfishers. Experience during the invasion of Sicily had shown that the vulnerable floatplanes were not appropriate in the contested airspace over the Normandy coast. As a result, floatplane pilots from Quincy, Tuscaloosa, Augusta, and battleships Nevada, Arkansas, and Texas converted to spare Spitfires and performed their gunfire spotting support from a more survivable aerial platform.
